Information for players to be aware of when playing their match play during a D.O.G.S. round, which are played by stroke play rules:

The Rules of Golf define Stroke and Match play in Rule 3.
There is no specific Golf Rule but section 6C (12) of Committee Procedures addresses this.
Summarized procedure:

  • It is discouraged as certain rules are substantially different. The logical reason is simple. In Match Play it only matters what your opponent does which you can watch. In stroke play you play against the field and must therefore apply uniform rules.

  • If two formats are combined, the Committee should make its best effort to support players.

  • If the Committee chooses to allow, it is recommended that players are advised that the Rules for stroke play apply throughout. For example, if a player plays out of turn, the other does not have the option to recall. You can also not overlook a rules transgression.

  • If a ruling is required for a combined match, it should apply the Rules of Golf as they would apply to each of match play and stroke play separately. i.e disqualification.

For D.O.G.S. President's Challenge the following apply:

  • Players play according to Stroke Play Rules. This includes the rule that Gimmies (less than putter grip) as per D.O.G.S. competition Rules.

  • Concessions
    • Concession of a stroke/hole or Match as per Match Play rules is
allowed but a Player participating in the Stroke Play Competition
must still complete the hole to qualify for Stroke Play Competition

  • Penalties

    • In transgression the Rules where the General Penalty applies (Two
Strokes in Stroke Play, and Loss of Hole in Match Play) the guilty
party will lose the hole in Match Play but needs to complete the
hole with a two-stroke penalty to qualify for the Stroke Play

    • This applies only to the following rule violations:

      • the wrong ball

      • from the wrong place

      • a ball that was placed instead of dropped

      • And improving conditions that may impact on stroke
