Hail the D.O.G.S.!!!!!
So the big weekend finally came as we headed West to the outskirts of Cilegon and the Royale Krakatau Golf & Country Club and Hotel. Named after the still active island volcano responsible for the loudest ever recorded explosion back in 1883 - so loud, it was apparently heard in Perth! - which sadly killed between 36,000 and 120,000 people. So, the trophy theme was our good friend Fritz emerging from Anak Krakatau which appeared from the depths of the Sunda Straits in 1930. A big thanks to Andrew Goode who designed and made the Trophy for the weekend's Champion.
Some 47 players, including our friends from TeeSet made the journey alone the Merak Toll road including some who decided to try the course out on the Friday afternoon. In most cases, this was the first look at the course and the great facilities and food in the Birdie Cafe at the club house. Then back to the Hotel for Pizza and various beverages before a good night's sleep in preparation for the real stuff on Saturday.
The competition was run over the 2 rounds with the results based on Stableford. We also had a number of novelty holes, including a Closest to the Line. Trophies were also given for Low Gross Overall. Best Nett Overall and 3rd and 2nd place overall Stableford. Thanks to Reysia Moore for getting those trophies made and to John & Sarah Brown for all the skills trophies. - It's always a team effort.
The weather was kind with good conditions for golf. The course was a bit soft so Lift, Clean and Place was in force. The greens were considerably slower than we are used to on the Jakarta/Bogor courses which made for some challenging putting - at least for the first round. We got off on time on the Saturday with a semi shotgun at 12:30 and, apart from a few spots of rain halfway through round everyone was finished in good time to get to the hotel, freshen up and get ready for the evening festivities.
A Great view of the Royale Krakatau complex.
We did see some beautiful sunsets over the course from the rooms lucky enough to have the view.
Just a short walk, or shuttle bus ride, from the hotel the Magal Korean BBQ House which had closed its doors to the public to be able to cater for us. The golfers were joined by spouses and family members giving the evening a real party atmosphere.
The food was excellent and the singer the restaurant had laid on was entertaining - once we got the volume turned down a bit!
There were a number of donated Lucky Draw Prizes to be won - so a big Thank You to Asian Tigers (Bill Lloyd), Cameron (Nic Verdenal), Pool Care (David & Rey Moore), Mark Dressler, Roger Finnie and the Magal Korean BBQ House. Lots of winners which all helped to make it a great evening. Fortunately, sufficient alcohol had been consumed by the time the attempts at singing started! So, after the dinner we staggered back to try and get a good night's sleep before the 8am start for Round 2. I hear some staggered rather more than others!
So, bright and early on Sunday we set off again with good cool and sunny conditions. A few sore heads struggled but nobody missed the morning call!
Again a semi shotgun saw us off on time and with good pace; we were all finished in good time to settle in the Birdie Restaurant whilst the scores were being collated. A big thanks to all of you for entering your scores into myGolf2u for both rounds - a really big help.
So, now to the results with a good array of trophies up for grabs!
Skills prizes first for both rounds: Alessandro Perciante got off to a good start in Round 1 winning both the Nearest to the Pin prizes but Michael Xiao and Tom Grace had learnt from Round 1 to take the honours in Round 2. A good spread for the Longest Drive winners with Michael "4 more years" Seabrook and Hitoshi taking the honours in Round 1 and Nic "the outrageous Frenchman" Verdenal and Anna Eriksson doing the same in Round 2.
For the Drive & Pitch holes John Brown managed both the selected holes over the 2 rounds with Minn Tun and Frenchy again for the other two. The Closest to the Line trophies went to Bill Lloyd and Indar with their straight drives.
So, now to the big winners:
Nic Verdenal collects the Low Gross Overall Trophy having shot an 80 and 73 for a total of 153, just 9 over par!
The Best Nett Overall went to the other outrageous Frenchman - a Canadian from Montreal with an Italian name - what's more outrageous than that - with a nett 144.
It took a count back to separate 2nd and 3rd on the Stableford with Umi Umay taking 3rd Place and Alessandro Perciante takign 2nd place - both with 74 points combined over the 2 rounds. Umi obviously plays a lot of golf back in Florida!
So, we come to the Champion of the Royale Krakatau Challenge. Despite being hit on the head with by a golf ball during his second round, Roberto Daniele made the necessary improvement on Sunday scoring 34 points in Round 1 and 41 in Round 2 giving a winning total of 75 points>
A big congratulations to all our winners!
