Hail the D.O.G.S. !!!!!
The D.O.G.S. have done a very good job over recent years of maintaining a good pace of play. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for everyone, and slow play in the morning groups resulted in a lengthy delay to our start. Eventually we were given a shotgun start from holes 1–3 and, once underway, play moved along steadily with everyone safely back in the clubhouse before dark.
It was another hot, dry day and everyone continues to benefit from the dry-season conditions, watching drives get plenty of extra run after landing on the fairways.
We were pleased to welcome back Dan Brod and Howard Short, while Ossi Ylinen and Jonnie Lyle joined the D.O.G.S. for the first time. Welcome, gentlemen, and we hope to see you all again soon.
There were also two eagles to celebrate. Jeremy Oberoi got things started on the par-5 1st, getting down in three, while Matt Timbrell produced one of the shots of the day on the par-4 10th, holing his approach for a two.
Chris Anderson also managed perhaps the most unusual shot of the day when his tee shot struck and killed a bird. We’re always happy to see a D.O.G. get a birdie, although this was definitely the wrong kind.
The day's novelty prizes were well spread around. Matt Timbrell collected Nearest to the Pin on the 3rd as well as Drive & Pitch on the 10th, while Ossi Ylinen took Nearest to the Pin on 17. Jonnie Lyle and Jeremy Oberoi claimed the Longest Drives on 6 and 16 respectively, with Arnold Castillon taking Drive & Pitch on the 4th.
Joost Hennalla needed just 27 putts to become our Putting Champion, while Anirudh Lakshman Katre took Lowest Gross with a fine round. At the other end of proceedings, Paul Barnett enjoyed the Most Exercise with 113 off the stick, while returning Dog Howard Short had a day he would probably rather forget, collecting the Cricket Bat with 27 points.
Jeremy Oberoi put together an excellent 41-point round but had to settle for Runner Up, because this week's Little Dog belongs to John Brown, who stormed home with 45 points to take the Round 3 Weekly Champion honours.
After winning the Little Dog in the final round at Rainbow Hills, then making the rather dramatic transition to the Cricket Bat in Round 1 at Bogor Raya, JB has now found his way back to the right end of the prize table. Such is life with the D.O.G.S.

There were plenty of improvements on the Eclectic board this week, resulting in some significant movement inside the Top 10. Roger Finnie has moved into top spot with a score of 62.50, narrowly ahead of Srinivas Murthy on 63.00. Arnold Castillon sits third on 64.00, with Chris Anderson and John Brown tied just behind on 64.50. With three rounds still to play, there is plenty of opportunity for the leaderboard to change again.

Know Your Options in a Red Penalty Area
A recent situation provides a good example of why it pays to know all of the relief options available from a red penalty area.
A player hit a shot from the fairway that struck a tree and ricocheted backwards into a red penalty area. The player quite reasonably went to the point where the ball had last crossed the edge of the penalty area and began preparing to take lateral relief within two club-lengths.
Perfectly legal — but not necessarily the best option.
Under Rule 17.1d, when a ball is in a red penalty area, the player has three relief options, each for one penalty stroke:
Stroke-and-distance relief: Play again from where the previous stroke was made.
Back-on-the-line relief: Go back on a line keeping the point where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area between the hole and the chosen spot.
Lateral relief: Drop within two club-lengths of where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area, no nearer the hole.
In this case, back-on-the-line relief offered little help because the line extended towards the pond, while lateral relief would have left the player in the rough amongst the trees.
The best option was therefore stroke and distance. For the same one-stroke penalty, the player could return to the original spot in the fairway and play the shot again from a much better position.
One important distinction: the lateral relief option is only available for a red penalty area. If the penalty area is marked yellow, the player has only two options under penalty of one stroke: stroke-and-distance or back-on-the-line relief. There is no two-club-length lateral relief option from a yellow penalty area.
The lesson: First, check whether you're dealing with a red or yellow penalty area so you know which relief options are available. If it's red, don't automatically reach for two club-lengths. Take a moment to consider all three options — sometimes the Rules can give you a much better way out.

Our final round at Gunung Geulis has moved to Sunday, November 1, so Halloween is out and Day of the Dead is in!
Día de los Muertos is not a sombre occasion, but a colourful and joyful celebration of remembrance—honouring family and friends who are no longer with us. That sounds like a theme the D.O.G.S. can get behind.
There will be a prize for the best Day of the Dead-inspired outfit, so think colourful rather than simply scary: decorated skulls, skeletons, flowers, sombreros, bright shirts, face paint—or whatever creative interpretation you can manage while still swinging a golf club.
Knowing the D.O.G.S., we’re expecting the line between celebration and complete nonsense to be suitably blurred.
