D.O.G.S. Third Round at Permata Sentul Golf & Country Club

Hail the D.O.G.S.!!!

Another hot afternoon greeted the 35 players who joined the third round at this challenging course overlooking Sentul. However, things cooled down during the round as we headed towards the late afternoon. Our usual shotgun start off the front nine - we'll try and switch between the front and back nine each week if we can - meant that we were all finished in reasonably good time.

Some newcomers and faces we haven't seen for a while; welcome to Amrit Singh and welcome back Gracie Prangel, Nelli Boguslavakaya, Roberto Daniele, Robson Drumond and Thijs Penning - hope we can see you all back again very soon - like next week!

The course continues to play dry and fast with the greens still at 11 on the Stimpmeter. A few tired golfers still recovering from the day before - the JHA Tournament - meant scoring was tough, as I found out myself!

Just a note on scoring: if you want to be in the running for the weekly Putting Champion prize please add up your putts on the scorecard - we will not do it for you - thanks!

Some of you have also commented on the state of the bunkers - lack of raking in particular and in some cases a lack of sand! - I have raised this with the caddie master but we can help by making sure the caddie's rake the bunkers after you have managed to hack your way out!

So to the play; A nice spread of prize winners this week which is always good to see. Chris Anderson and Romas Djailani managed to hold their tee shots on the green to take the Nearest to the Pin Prizes. Steve Sutton and Gracie Prangel had good long and straight drives to take the Longest Drive prizes with Minn Tun and Robson Drumond hitting accurate approach shots to take the Drive & Pitch prizes.

The ever-ubiquitous Laurie O'Connor had his flat stick working becoming this week's Putting Champion. Chris Anderson led the way in scoring off the stick taking the Lowest Gross prize. Dan Swinburne had a good round but had to settle for the Runner Up slot leaving the way for the big guy Paul Barnett - look who's talking - to shoot a great round and take the Little Dog home as our Champion this week.

A big congratulations to all our winners.

The Drive & Pitch prizes duly appreciated!

So, we are now at the halfway stage in this series and there continues to be a lot of movement at the top. With only 4 points separating the top 5 and Laurie leaping into the top slot with plenty of room for improvement, there's a lot to play for. Even Paul Barnett after his great round this week jumped over 40 places to now sit in 6th place and only 4.2 off the lead - just goes to show how volatile it can all be!

Three rounds to go and it could all change again....so, please grab a friend or three, sign up for the next thrilling installment and don't forget to let Rod know your preferred playing partners. Please also make sure you have confirmed that your preferred playing partners are their preferred playing partners! Also note that signing up early helps a lot in getting things ready with the club - thanks.

If the wall of a bunker consists of soil, the wall is part of the bunker.

A - True

B - False

Correct answer: B

Explanation: Only the part of an area with a bunker is defined as bunker where sand is supposed to be. If an area of the bunker is washed out and no sand is there any more it is still a part of the bunker. If e.g. sand is washed to the outside of the area where it should be in the bunker, it is still not the bunker.

On a par 3, player's tee shot might be lost, so they play a provisional ball which is holed. Player A does not wish to look for the original ball, but Player B does go to look for it. Before Player A lifts the provisional ball from the hole, Player B finds Player A's original ball in some thick rough near the green.

What is the ruling?

A - Player A had completed the hole in three strokes as soon as the provisional ball was holed.

B - As player A did not search for the original ball, the score with provisional ball counts.

C - Player A must abandon the provisional ball and continue with the original ball.

Correct answer: C

Explanation: The score with a provisional ball that has been holed only becomes the player's score for the hole when the player lifts the ball from the hole before the original ball has been found in bounds.

A player's ball lies just off the putting green. There is sand on the putting green between the ball and the hole that the player wishes to remove.

What is the ruling?

A - As the ball is not on the green the player must not remove the sand.

B - Sand is not a loose impediment and cannot be removed.

C - The sand on the green may be removed by any means.

Correct answer: C

Explanation: Sand and loose soil on the putting green may be removed without penalty.

A tee that is 4 1/2 inches long conforms to the Rules.

A - True

B – False

Correct answer: B

Explanation: A tee must be no longer than 4 inches long to conform with the Equipment Rules.
